Thomas Ranger English 1770's Grandfather Clock

This authentic Georgian English tall case or "grandfather" clock is signed "Thomas Ranger - Chipsted." and dates from about 1770. The 8 day movement has been cleaned and oiled, runs very well and strikes the hour.

The wonderful old finish is in excellent condition with beatiful warm patina, a few mars, and a little wear. The wood is solid mahogany, and the tapered columns have original hand-cast brass ferrules.

Hand engraving on the brass dial is artistic and classical. "Chipsted" is now spelled "Chipstead," and is south of London. The maker, Thomas Ranger, is well known for his tall and wall clocks. His work was displayed in the exhibition "Time and Place - English Country Clocks 1600-1846" at the Museum of the History of Science at Oxford in 2007. Another of his clocks was pictured in the periodical of the Antiquarian Horology Society of Great Britain.

An unpretentious country clock, the lovely case is well proportioned with old wavy glass in the door. Measurements are 20" wide, 10" deep and 6'11" tall. E-C1212 This item has sold.
