This exquisite sewing stand dates from the American Empire period about 1840 and is mahogany with engraved pewter and pearl inlay.
The lid has a support, inside is a drawer with tiny compartments for needlework materials. This work table was beautifully hand crafted by a master carpenter with matched flame grain mahogany and an octagonal pedestal. Both drawers have hand-cut dovetails, and the fine old finish has warm patina, with a few mars for character to prove its age.
This antique furniture was treasured by the "lady of the manor" for her fancy needlework, and was usually placed next to her favorite chair in the parlor. It is finished on all sides, and measures 18" deep, 21" wide, and 32" tall. E-S1822
