New England 1820's Cherry and Birdseye Butler's Desk

— $2,750.00 —

Original Price Was: $2,975.00

Entirely hand made by a skilled country carpenter about 1820 this exceptional desk has gorgeous figured cherry wood with birdseye maple trim on the front and a top cut from a single plank of butternut 20" wide. The knobs are original hand turned maple with a few old chips, see photos. All the wood is hand planed, drawers are hand dovetailed with chamfered bottoms and square nails were used. The finish truly glows, and accentuates the warm patina and natural grain of the wood.

These desks were often called "Butler's" because they were used by the butler, the head of a household staff, who paid bills and kept house records.

The drop front is a solid working surface 29" above the floor, with pullout supports. Inside are mars and tack holes to show this desk was really well used. Size is 20" deep, 44" wide and 46" tall. Completely solid and usable, this wonderful desk from the country Sheraton or Federal period has great warmth and charm. N-D1500
